A man has been punched in the head and face during a serious assault.

The 31-year-old was walking in Main Street in Largs, North Ayrshire, when he was approached by a man at around 2.25am yesterday morning.

He was punched and knocked to the ground and was taken to hospital suffering from head and facial injuries. He was released after treatment.

The suspect is described as white and he was wearing a blue polo shirt.

Detective Constable Scott Moore said: "We are currently trying to establish a motive for this attack. At the time of the assault, the area was busy with members of the public. I would appeal to anyone who was in the area and witnessed this attack to come forward."
