POLICE believe the body of a motorist may have lain in the wreckage of a car for several hours.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident in which a 28-year-old man died near the border with England.

The discovery was made when a Mini was found down an embankment by a passing motorist at first light on Saturday morning. The man inside the car is thought to have been dead for hours.

The position of the vehicle was discovered by a passing motorist down a steep embankment.

The accident on the main A7 Carlisle Edinburgh road, two miles west of Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway. The route also runs through the Scottish Borders.

Police Scotland closed off the road around nine hours after the discovery of the accident about a mile south of Skippers Bridge.

The man who has not been named was the only person in the Mini.

A Police Scotland spokesman said that the accident happened between 2am and 7.30am and involved only the one vehicle was involved.

The road was closed until 4.30pm during the day and diversions were set up on both sides of the crash. An accident investigation went on to find out the cause and to recover the vehicle.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are trying to establish the cause of the accident and to find out the exact time it happened. Police were alerted to the accident and it appears that the vehicle went down an embankment during the night.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the accident or anyone who saw the vehicle registration mark YG64XU during the evening and overnight on Friday."
