Double Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel heads a list of best-selling authors appearing at the Borders Book Festival in the summer.

Kate Mosse, Alexander McCall Smith and children's horror writer Darren Shan have all been confirmed for the event, now in its 10th year, which takes place in Melrose from June 13 to 16.

Mantel is expected to be a big draw after an exceptional year that saw her novel Bring up the Bodies scoop the prestigious Man Booker Prize and Costa Book of the Year.

The tale is a sequel to Wolf Hall, which chronicled the 16th-century exploits of Thomas Cromwell, minister to Henry VIII, and which picked up the Man Booker in 2009.

Mantel is currently working on the third part of the trilogy.

Just four authors took part in the inaugural festival in 2004. Now, around 13,000 book lovers attend a programme of more than 60 events.

Other highlights this year include a rendition of a Walter Scott poem by actress Joanna Lumley and an appearance by Laidlaw author William McIlvanney.

Popular children's writers Lauren Child and Francesca Simon will also talk about their new works.

Festival director Alistair Moffat said: "We couldn't have hoped for a more diverse, starry and topical cast of stars to help us celebrate the 10 years."

Jonathan Tweedie, a director at sponsors Brewin Dolphin, said: "When you look back over the past decade, the quality, range and diversity and of the authors who grace the marquees is truly remarkable.

"We look forward to this year's packed programme."
