THE lives of five Royal Marines will be at "real and immediate" risk if their names are allowed to be made public after a high-profile trial over the killing of an injured insurgent in Afghanistan, judges have heard.

Their lawyers are challenging an order which lifted anonymity after the conviction of one of them at a court martial.

At the Court Martial Appeal Court in London yesterday, Hugh Tomlinson QC, for three of the marines - including the serviceman who was found guilty - said it was a "unique" case.

He told them there was "unique animosity from people who are well capable of causing death or serious harm to individuals they take a negative view of".
