HOLLYWOOD actor James McAvoy has bagged a monster new movie role – playing Frankenstein.

The Scottish star beat competition from actors including Boardwalk Empire favourite Jack Huston and Black Mirror star Toby Kebbell to win the coveted title part.

McAvoy, 34, from Glasgow, is currently negotiating the final deal details to appear in director Paul McGuigan's film.

He will join former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who has already signed up to play Dr Victor Von Frankenstein's sidekick Igor in the Max Landis-scripted flick. The sci-fi spin on Mary Shelley's classic horror tale will see hunchback assistant Igor help Frankenstein in creating his monster.

An insider revealed: "James is just about to put pen to paper and sign up for the movie. Everyone is hugely excited, what with Daniel already on board to play Igor.

"This will be a sci-fi take on the classic story about a creature produced through a scientific experiment."

There are currently several Frankenstein movies in production including the mega budget Hollywood blockbuster titled I, Frankenstein.

McAvoy will next be seen as a corrupt policeman with a cocaine habit in the eagerly awaited big screen adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Filth. The actor was nominated earlier this year for Best Actor award at this year's Olivier Awards for his role in the theatre production of Macbeth.

During one performance at London's Trafalgar Studios this year, McAvoy brought it to standstill to berate the man who appeared to be filming the production on his mobile phone.

McAvoy, who still has a home in Glasgow, has been married to fellow actor Anne-Marie Duff for seven years and they have a young son.
