McCall Smith kicks off festival

ONE of Scotland's most popular book festivals has begun with a reading by acclaimed author Alexander McCall Smith.

He was the first in a long line of guests including James Kelman, Janice Galloway and John Simpson who will appear at the Wigtown Book Festival.

The festival will also feature a special sound installation featuring Cheryl Cole and Nicola Roberts of pop group Girls Aloud.
