Actor Ewan McGregor has appealed for the public's help to re-unite him with his love bug, a Volkswagen Beetle .

The star bought the green classic car for £550, earned while working in the kitchens of a hotel in his home town of Crieff, Perthshire.

Ewan, who stars in a film tribute to the Beetle, which was launched in the 1930s, has spoken of his longing to meet the vehicle again if it had not already been scrapped.

The 44-year-old Scot disclosed in the documentary The Bug: Life and Times of the People's Car?, that he could never forget the legendary motor.

Launching his appeal, McGregor said: "I am pretty sure it's gone though. The guy I sold it to took out the engine for his other bug and sold what was left to a guy at our school who I have no contact with anymore.

"It wasn't road taxed since early 90's so may have been scrapped."

Ewan worked from the age of 14 as a dishwasher and by the time he was 16, had bought second hand VW Beetle. After leaving Morrison's Academy, where his parents both worked as teachers, he passed his test at 17, and went off to study drama at a college in Fife.

He added on film: "There's something about being in this little car that is one of my favourite places in the world - it is.

"It has a lot to do with not growing up.

"Somewhere in me is still that 16 year-old who got his first car and never got over it."

McGregor, 43, revealed he has a collection of the VWs as his favourite runabouts, in his Californian home.

The Trainspotting and Star Wars actor takes his pet dog as a travelling companion. The dog even has his own car seat when they are pictured out-and-about in Los Angeles.

He has even jokingly said; "I'd like to be buried in a VW."
