A PARAMEDIC has been reported to the procurator-fiscal for careless driving after his response vehicle crashed into a bus stop.

The 54-year-old man is being investigated for the offence after the 4x4 car he was driving became involved in the smash at Causeyside Street, Paisley, at 10.20am on Monday.

The medic was en route to a 999 call when the Honda CRV emergency vehicle mounted the pavement and ploughed into a bus stop on the busy street after colliding with a blue Renault Megane.

Pensioner Martin Burns was injured in the crash as the vehicle demolished the shelter. The 77-year-old, who was waiting for a bus, was pushed through a glass panel to the ground and was taken to the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

However, he received only minor cuts and bruises to his face and hands and was discharged later that day.

The paramedic was also injured and taken to hospital but was allowed home following a check-up.

Sam Aitchison was at work at a butcher nearby. His staff helped Mr Burns as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Mr Aitchison said: "It is very lucky that no-one was seriously injured as that is a very busy bus stop."

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police confirmed that a report had been submitted for careless driving. She said: "A 54-year-old man is the subject of a report to the procurator-fiscal in connection with alleged road traffic offences."

Police also confirmed the driver of the Renault car was not injured.
