THE wealth of sporting and cultural events taking place in Glasgow this year has provided a welcome boost for the city's hotel trade.

Research shows that across the 11 nights of the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow hotels achieved an average occupancy of 95.3 per cent - an 11.2 per cent increase on the same period in 2013.

This was accompanied by a sharp increase in room revenue, which rose by a hefty 155 per cent to £121.23.

Piping Live! and the World Pipe Band Championships, from August 11-16, also brought a boost in visitors, with occupancy during the event remaining above 97 per cent and reaching 99 per cent on three nights.

Other events, including the Merchant City Festival, the UDO World Street Dance Championships, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway Tour at the SSE Hydro and the International Bible Students Association (IBSA) conference at the SECC, also provided a boost.

According to figures from tourism market specialists LJ Research, average occupancy for August in Glasgow reached 91.6 per cent, with room revenue increasing by 19.4 per cent to £72.27 compared to August 2013.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "August was a mega month for Glasgow.

"As the Commonwealth Games came to an end the buzz generated continued as we welcomed a diverse mix of colourful events to the city - everything from Piping Live! and the World Pipe Band Championships to the UDO World Street Dance Championships."

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau also delivered a high-profile joint marketing and TV advertising campaign with Glasgow 2014 across the UK, encouraging ticket-holders to make the most of their time in the city by extending their stay and that also had an impact on occupancy performance.
