Ed Miliband has insisted Labour remains the party of working people despite a recent tweet by one of his MPs disrespecting a family in Rochester.

The party leader criticised Emily Thornberry for her tweet before the Rochester by-election which showed a picture of a house with three England flags.

The post was branded "snobby" by the family living there. Thornberry apologised and quit the shadow cabinet.

Miliband said: "The Labour Party was founded as the party of working people. We are the party of working people. And we will always remain the party of working people.

"That is why I was furious at the tweet by Emily Thornberry which conveyed a sense of disrespect about a family in Rochester.

"Respect is the basic rule of politics and there is nothing unusual or odd about having England flags in your window.

He said the Rochester and Strood by-election won by Ukip was "devastating" for David Cameron.
