The film company has hired the Coatbridge-born author to be a creative consultant on the Marvel Comics properties it owns.

Millar, who has written X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four comics, and whose own creations Wanted and Kick-Ass have been turned into Hollywood films starring Angelina Jolie and Nicolas Cage, will be working with the film company on developing new approaches for its X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises.

The studio currently has a new X-Men film to be directed by Matthew Vaughn who has also directed Kick-Ass and is working on Kick-Ass 2 based on Millar's comics, a Wolverine movie and a new version of the Fantastic Four. Millar will be a consultant on all of them.

"As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with comic books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig," Millar said. "I spent 10 years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me.

"I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema's biggest talents. The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone call I've ever had."

Emma Watts, production president at 20th Century Fox, said: "We are excited to be working with Mark. He is simply one of the most original voices in comics today and will be an invaluable resource to us and our filmmakers as we look for fresh opportunities."
