Coffee mug in hand, the 41-year-old paces the well-trodden alcohol aisle at the Costcutter convenience store in Gretna, where he is manager.
His is the only off-licensed grocer in the Scottish town that’s closest to the English border, and he’s worried. Surveying the display of cheap wines and superstrong lagers on sale, he contemplates the impact on his livelihood of the Scottish Government’s plan to introduce a minimum price per unit of alcohol during this parliamentary session. Although it has not yet been set, it’s thought the price will be fixed at somewhere from 45p to 60p.
