Ministers to fight Puttnam's proposal

The Government has been urged to throw out plans by peers to write into law elements of Lord Justice Leveson's proposals for press regulation.

Ministers will attempt to remove changes to the Defamation Bill amid fears they could have a "chilling effect on free speech".

Unless the amendment put forward by Lord Puttnam is removed, campaigners for libel law reform believe the legislation could be scrapped.
