MOTOR neurone disease (MND) campaigner Gordon Aikman has raised more than £200,000 for charity.

The former policy and communications adviser to the Scottish Labour Party, who was given a special award by The Herald for his work raising awareness of the disease, is donating the money to MND Scotland.

Mr Aikman was diagnosed with the terminal disease in June last year and recently helped to secure funding for additional specialist MND nurses after meeting with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

He took to Twitter on Thursday to tell of his fundraising success, posting: "BOOM! With @OrionGroup's kind donation we SMASHED £200K! - Who will take us over £250K?! #MND."
