Radio 1's Chris Moyles has been snubbed by the Sony Radio Academy Awards, after failing to get a single nomination for the first time in seven years.

Radio 2's Chris Evans and Absolute's Christian O'Connell will battle it out for the hotly contested breakfast show honours at this year's event.

The pair will also face each other in the music radio personality of the year category at the respected bash in May.

But Moyles, the breakfast host for more than eight years, failed to make the shortlist for any category of the awards for the first time since 2005. Last year the 38-year-old was in the running for two gongs.

The awards also demonstrate a huge change in fortunes for once-doomed station BBC Radio 6 Music, which finds itself in the running for national station of the year.

It had been threatened with closure under BBC cost-saving plans, but a huge campaign by listeners and fans helped secure its future. It is up against sister station Radio 2 and Kerrang! Radio for the title.

Evans and O'Connell face last year's winner, 5 Live Breakfast, in the breakfast show battle, alongside Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott's Heart Breakfast (London) and Kiss Breakfast.

Completing the music personality line-up are Lauren Laverne and Huey Morgan from Radio 6 Music plus Radio 1 Xtra's Gemma Cairney.
