Murray trademarks name to protect image rights

ANDY Murray has been given the green light to trademark his own name to protect his money-spinning image rights.

The Wimbledon champion has gained exclusive rights over merchandise bearing his name in a move that will prevent any unscrupulous traders using his image without permission. It comes after several applications to trademark his name were made by people unconnected to the star.

The 26-year-old made an application to the UK Intellectual Property Office to have his name registered. It has confirmed that the trademark has now been registered after no objections were received.

The trademark covers more than 100 goods including DVDs, computer games, sportswear, calendars and stationery. Among some of the more unusual items listed are lingerie, baby clothes, Halloween costumes, toy dolls, roller skates and surf boards. Murray has also gained ownership over any bathtub toys, umbrellas, slippers and pyjamas bearing his name.

Murray hired trademark specialist law firm Harrison Goddard Foote to handle the application. Attorney David Potter said: "Some of the items may seem bizarre but that doesn't necessarily mean he is going to sell them as merchandise."

Murray is recovering from back surgery in preparation for the Australian Open later this month.
