NEARLY £500,000 in capital funding has been given to 15 museums and galleries in Scotland.

The grants, ranging from £7000 to £40,000, will support renovation or conservation projects, and are issued by Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS), the umbrella body for the museum sector.

Renfrewshire Council will receive £40,000 to showcase its Paisley Ceramics Collection.

An award of £30,343 will allow the City of Edinburgh Council to purchase high-specification display cases for the Museum of Edinburgh.

Douglas Connell, chairman of MGS, said: "These awards represent a significant investment in Scotland's museums sctor.

"This capital funding is supporting projects that will help to secure sustainability for museums across the country - a fundamental goal of Museums Galleries Scotland's work to develop and support the sector."

There are more than 400 museums and galleries in Scotland, which welcome 25.6 million visits a year.

Fife Folk Museum Trust is to receive £40,000 for the purchase of display cases.

Aberdeen City Council will receive £40,000 to improve the storage for its paintings at the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum.

Scottish Railway Preservation Society will receive £39,225, allowing it to replace the doors on its running shed at its headquarters in Bo'Ness.

West Dunbartonshire Council receives £40,000, which will help it purchase an environmentally con-trolled storage area to help store its fine art collection.
