It is the seventh year Dunoon has hosted the festival, which is expected to generate up to £5 million for the local economy.

Glasgow Gaelic School pupil Seona Brown, six, won The Joan Campbell Memorial Trophy for Solo Singing in the 5-6 learners category and a poetry title.

Arlene McKerrell, conductor of Islay Youth Gaelic Choir, headed up a triple win as the choir took The Queen Elizabeth (1937) Coronation Trophy, The Martin Wilson North Berwick Trophy, and The Alistair MacNeil (North Berwick) Trophy.

Shinty and football matches will complement the main brace of creative competition with the final concert to be held on Friday. A grand finale on Saturday will see a parade of massed choirs through the town centre, which will be led by pipe bands.

The Royal National Mod is organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, the world's oldest Gaelic organisation, with competitors from all over the world now in Dunoon.
