The new heads of the BBC's factual and arts production have been named and will be based in Scotland.

The BBC announced internally last night that Natalie Humphreys would be controller of factual production for the UK network, moving up from her current role as head of factual at BBC Scotland.

In addition, Jonty Claypole has been appointed as the BBC's Head of Arts for the UK, and will also be based in Scotland.

His credits include British Masters, The Birth of the British Novel, Ceramics: A Fragile History and Gershwin's Summertime and he was series producer on Seven Ages of Britain and the Picture of Britain.

Ken MacQuarrie, director of BBC Scotland, said: "Having Natalie and Jonty based here in Pacific Quay will help put Scotland right at the very heart of the BBC's factual programme-making. These are major heavyweights in factual television and we're delighted that they will be sharing their expertise."

Ms Humphries said: "Factual programmes sit at the very heart of the BBC and I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to play a part in shaping our future output."

Mr Claypole said: "There's nowhere in the world like the BBC for top quality arts programming, so I can't think of a better job than Head of Arts. This new post is an opportunity to bring together the wealth of talent and expertise across the different production bases in innovative ways."
