New honour for female champions

Team GB's female Olympic and Paralympic medallists were collective winners at the Women of the Year Awards yesterday, prompting Scots rower Katherine Grainger to say they had "inspired every generation".

Doreen Lawrence, mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence, author PD James, women's rights activist Zainab Salbi and singer Kate Woolveridge were the four other winners at a glitzy ceremony in a London hotel.

Ms Grainger, from Glasgow – pictured, left, with wheelchair rugby player Josie Pearson and Paralympic cycling champion Sarah Storey – said: "The slogan 'inspire a generation' was about kids. In all honesty, it's inspired every generation. There's people doing things they would never have thought of before."
