New industry 'under threat'

Chalara ash dieback could fatally damage hopes of establishing a new industry north of the Border, according to the body that represents woodland managers and timber-based businesses.

Stuart Goodall, ConFor chief executive, said: "In Scotland we have quite a significant timber industry, but it is largely based around soft woods and there are few hardwoods that you can grow for the market place. Ash is very popular in newly planted woodlands.
