A NEW mural by the Scottish playwright and artist John Byrne has been unveiled at one of Edinburgh's leading theatres.

The work, All The World's A Stage, has been painted on the dome of the Viennese Baroque auditorium of the King's Theatre.

The painting was commissioned by the Festival City Theatres Trust as part of a restoration and refurbishment of the theatre.

All the World's A Stage depicts a celestial scene, with a black harlequin carrying the sun through clouds and a flame-haired woman, draped in a star-cloth banner, pushing the moon through the sky.

Duncan Hendry, chief executive of the Trust, said: "There was no-one more appropriate to provide such a beautiful design and I'm sure that audiences will enjoy his work for many years to come."

Byrne added: "That's a very nice thing to say. And it's true. I cannot think of anyone else."

The King's dome commission was painted over the course of five weeks, by a team led by Byrne and artist Kevin O'Leary.

It marks the completion of the refurbishment designed and project managed by Rachel Simmonds of Edinburgh architects Smith Scott Mullan Associates.

The renovations include new seating, new carpeting, a new ventilation system and a restored decorative scheme, completed by heritage and decorating firm Nevin of Edinburgh.
