Competitors from Canada, US, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand gathered for the event with thousands attending to watch dancing, piping and heavy athletics.
Today it will host the first Cowal Hill Race, a three-mile)run in which competitors will set off from the town centre before scaling Tom Odhar and then racing to the stadium. The event will end tonight with the massing of the bands.
Gathering chairman Ronnie Cairns said: "We couldn't really have wished for anything more for the first two days - a fantastic atmosphere with great crowds and top-quality competitions, with even the weather doing its bit."
