OLYMPIC athlete Keri-Anne Payne will lead the charge at the first Great Scottish Swim to take place at Loch Lomond.

The open-water silver medalist and 10K open water world champion has launched this year's event, which is taking place at Scotland's largest loch for the first time.

More than 2000 people are expected to take part when the swim gets underway on August 24.

The endurance trial is part of the Great Swim series, which also includes events at Lake Windermere in Cumbria, the Royal Victoria Dock in London, Salford Quays in Manchester and Alton Water Reservoir near Ipswich.

Payne, who is based in Edinburgh, said: "I've taken part in a few of the Great Swim series events around the country but never in Scotland before, and I'm really excited to participate in the first-ever Loch Lomond event.

"Open water can seem daunting for a lot of people, but it really is a great feeling to swim in fresh water – especially when you have such stunning scenery as Loch Lomond."

Swimmers can choose from half-mile, one-mile and two-mile swims, which are open to athletes of all abilities as well as elite competitors.

European and Commonwealth gold medal-winning triathlete Iwan Thomas will also take part. He said: "I have taken part in triathlons before, so I'm no stranger to a wetsuit, but it will be amazing to swim in an iconic location like Loch Lomond."

Mairi Bell, head of visitor experience for Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, said: "The event will bring 2000 participants resulting in a boost to the local economy. We are encouraging participants and spectators to take advantage of being in Scotland's first National Park and take time to stay and explore the stunning surrounding landscapes."

Alex Jackson, event director of the Great Swim Series for organiser Nova International said: "The Great Swim brings swimmers of all abilities together to compete in the great outdoors.

"We can't think of a better location for the Great Scottish Swim than the majestic surroundings of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and are thrilled to have Keri-Anne launch this year's event."
