The time travelling romance TV series Outlander will be available to UK viewers on Amazon, it has been confirmed.

Outlander, which is shot in Scotland and based at studios in Cumbernauld, will be available on the Amazon Prime Instant Video system from March 26.

Outlander was acquired by Amazon in a deal with Sony Pictures Television, who distributes the series worldwide.

Other shows on the streaming system include Transparent, Ripper Street, and the Norse action-drama Vikings.

Some fans of the best selling books by Diana Gabaldon have already expressed dismay that the series, starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan in the lead roles, will not be available on a more mainstream channel.

Jay Marine, Vice President of Amazon Instant Video in the EU, said: "In the last year we have launched some fantastic shows for our customers, what better way to celebrate our first anniversary than by bringing the gripping first series of Outlander exclusively to our millions of UK Prime member.

"Filmed in Scotland and already hugely popular stateside, we can't wait to bring the show and its stellar cast of breakthrough British talent to the UK where we know there is a huge fan following already.

"This addition to the Amazon Prime Instant Video portfolio will be in great company alongside our exciting range of award winning and critically acclaimed original and exclusive TV shows such as Transparent, Ripper Street, Bosch, Vikings, and Mozart in the Jungle."

Mike Wald, executive vice president, international distribution for Sony Pictures Television, said: "Amazon is an ideal partner for this rich, cinematic production which has already thrilled millions of fans worldwide, and now UK audiences can binge on the episodes and enjoy it on demand."

The first 8 episodes of the Outlander season one will be available on Prime Instant Video from March 26.

The remaining episodes will then launch weekly on Amazon Prime Instant Video from April 5, each episode being released every Sunday hours after broadcast in the US. Amazon Prime Instant Video has also secured the rights to further series, with the second season set to start filming this summer.
