Firefighters responded to more than 1,100 incidents during a busy bonfire night.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were called out to 507 bonfires - many of which were unsupervised and could have put homes or other buildings at risk.

November 5 is traditionally a busy time for fire services across the country, with SFRS dealing with up to four times as many incidents as they would on a normal night.

In addition, emergency workers were involved after a car reversed into a building in Renfrew, while more than 30 firefighters responded to a fire which had erupted in a wood chipper in Cowie near Stirling yesterday evening.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Boyle, the SFRS director of service delivery, said: "While it will take time to establish the full picture it's clear we have seen a significant number of incidents requiring the attendance of our crews across Scotland.

"Firefighters responded to 999 calls from the Borders to the Western Isles, many of which related to bonfires that were unsupervised or endangered homes and other buildings.

"It's important to remember however that our crews were not only involved in bonfire-related activities, they also responded to emergencies including building fires and road traffic collisions.
