Panel to oversee commemorations of First World War

A 12-strong panel of military professionals, academics, clergy and education specialists has been appointed to oversee Scotland's centenary commemorations of the First World War.

The Scottish Commemorations Panel, which will meet for the first time on Thursday, will oversee the delivery of the Government's commemoration programme for the 1914-1918 conflict.

Its number includes Brigadier David Allfrey MBE; the Duke of Buccleuch; the Rev Ron Ferguson; Maggie Cunningham, chairwoman of BBC Alba, and the Sunday Herald's diplomatic editor Trevor Royle.

"This panel brings together 12 remarkable people with an exceptional range of skills, experience and expertise across many fields," said Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs. "Their wisdom and advice will be extremely helpful in guiding Scotland's approach to commemorations sensitively over the period to 2019 and ensuring Scotland's commemorative plans are relevant to all parts of society."Panel chairman Norman Drummond said: "Scotland's Commemorative Programme must provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about the war in meaningful ways."Mr Royle, who has written extensively about the war, said the challenge for the panel would be to look at the stories of the war where Scotland played a leading role or where the war had a huge impact on the country. "You don't want to wrap the history of the war up in a kilt, but you want to emphasise distinctly Scottish elements in the war and how these affected the development of Scotland. "I suppose you'd be looking at things like the disproportionate number of Scots who joined in the early months of the war and the casualties that followed, the role of women, the impact on the countryside and the revival of the Scottish industry."The other panellists are: Lieutenant General Sir Alistair Irwin; Group Captain Bob Kemp; journalist Magnus Linklater; Dr Bill Maxwell; Professor Louise Richardson; Commodore Charles Stevenson and Professor Sir Hew Strachan.
