William Watters was packing his shopping into the boot of his car when a motor smashed into him after being shunted by another vehicle.
Mr Watters, from Prestonpans, East Lothian, had just left the Tesco supermarket in Musselburgh, East Lothian, when he was badly injured.
The 68-year-old retired coal merchant was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following the accident, which took place on October 10, but failed to recover.
A family member announced the death online, sparking a flood messages of sympathy.
One post from Tesco worker Tricia Sutherland said: "I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss."
