MORE than three in 10 people within a decade of pensionable age don't know how much they'll need to live on in retirement.

Research showed they had no active pension plan, while one in four didn't know how much to expect from their retirement savings.

Two-thirds of those surveyed by Aegon UK admitted they had no back-up plan to provide an income should they be unable to work before they retire.

The life insurance and pensions firm found almost 40% of women had no form of active pension, compared with just over 30% of men.

The biggest provision shortage was in Wales and South-west England, where 46% and 42.9% of respondents respectively had no pension.

In Scotland, 28% of people questioned said they didn't have proper pension provision in place. Half of those questioned north of the Border didn't know or had only a vague idea how much their pension was worth.
