THE best of British modern art will be displayed alongside works by Spanish master Pablo Picasso when a major exhibition opens in Edinburgh tomorrow.

Pieces by Henry Moore, Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Francis Bacon, Graham Sutherland and David Hockney will be on show at the National Galleries of Scotland until November 4.

However, it is Picasso's paintings which are likely to draw the biggest crowds.

They include Child With A Dove – which could fetch £50 million when it is put up for sale – Nude Woman In Red Armchair, The Three Dancers and Head of a Man.

Patrick Elliott, chief curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, said: "The exhibition shows how British artists took inspiration from the strength of Picasso's work throughout his life and then took it in all kinds of different directions."
