The red carpet parade for the 2012 Brit Awards featured outfits that were both daring and colourful, and was executed with considerably more poise and co-ordination than events that later transpired on stage.

There was controversy at the end of the evening as Adele responded angrily after her Best Album acceptance speech was cut short to make way for Blur’s performance and acceptance of their Outstanding Contribution to Music Award.

However the ceremony began in style as a procession of stars showcased their designer outfits, with red and black the event’s signature colours.

Rihanna, who won the International Female Solo Artist Award, wore a gold Givenchy dress, with (almost) armpit-length brown leather gloves adding a touch of individuality.

Adele was elegant in a long black dress – though less than elegant when she gestured at the cameras after her acceptance speech was cut short.

Blur were recognised for their contribution to music and performed a medley of their hits.

Imitations of Aberdeenshire star Emeli Sande’s trademark blonde quiff can be spotted in city centres around Scotland, and while her black dress with white trim may have been on the conservative side, she proved that the most important award show accessory is a huge grin.

One of the best-dressed stars of the evening, Kylie wore an azure blue Yves Saint Laurent dress and sparkling ear-rings.

X Factor success story One Direction, who won Best Single for What Makes You Beautiful, were dapper in their co-ordinated grey suits.

Jessie J showed off her figure, and the evening’s most daring outfit, in a sheer red dress with strategically-placed embroidery. The knickers-on-show look could have been inspired by the orange outfit Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie wore to the Grammys earlier this month (see inset).

Also in eye-catching red, Born to Die singer Lana Del Rey went for old-Hollywood glamour, choosing Vivienne Westwood couture with a sleek hair do and bright crimson nail varnish completing the picture.

Ed Sheeran, who celebrated his 21st birthday a few days ago, was thrilled with his two Brits, for British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.
