THE Piper Alpha disaster was the worst in terms of the psychiatric impact on its victims, according to a trauma expert who has worked with survivors of war, earthquakes and aircraft crashes.
Professor David Alexander, who led the trauma team following the North Sea tragedy in 1988, said he had not encountered more serious long-term psychological consequences for those involved, despite his work following the Lockerbie bombing, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, Sri Lanka tsunami, and Balkans war.
