Plea for fuel bill cuts as British Gas posts profit of £585m

Consumer groups yesterday heaped pressure on British Gas to rein in home fuel bills after the company announced a £585 million profit on the back of the coldest winter in 30 years.

The freezing spell after Christmas forced Scots to run up huge charges as they struggled to heat their homes, swelling the coffers of Scottish Gas owner Centrica by twice as much as last year and contributing to an overall £1.56 billion profit.
