Nothing seems to be off-limits where some thieves are concerned - not even lobster creels.

For opportunistic thieves thought they had made a prize catch when they took 30 of the devices used to catch the delicacy from Stonehaven harbour in Aberdeenshire.

Unable to resist the hefty netted baskets, the thieves loaded them onto a large vehicle or van sometime on Thursday or Friday.

However, police are hoping they will not get far and have alerted people to be on the lookout for the creels which are worth thousands of pounds.

One possibility is the thieves may try and sell them on the internet.

Constable Andrew Adam from the Stonehaven Police Office said: "Thefts of this kind can often be directly linked to people's livelihoods and as such have an impact on the local community.

"I would ask members of the public to contact Police Scotland via the 101 number if they have any information in relation to this theft or if they were in the harbour area on Thursday night and saw anything suspicious."
