a school in Glasgow will need repairs costing tens of thousands of pounds after being set on fire.

Investigations are continuing into the cause of the blaze at St Marnock's Primary, Pollok, on Sunday.

Flames tore through the front of the school, causing "considerable"damage to the entrance.

Detective Constable Jackie McIntyre, from Pollok CID, is leading the inquiry into the fire.

She said: "There is no doubt this fire was set deliberately and there has been considerable damage.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information about the fire to contact Pollok CID."

Despite the damage to the building, Glasgow City Council said St Marnock's will open as normal after the summer holidays.

A spokeswoman said: "The front entrance will need replacing and there is smoke damage.

"However, we are confident the school will open as normal at the start of the new term in August."

The fire happened less than a month after Gowanbank Primary – about a mile away from St Marnock's – was also hit by a blaze.

Work to repair damage at Gowanbank Primary is already under way and the school is due to open as normal next month.

Vandals were suspected of setting fire to the school in Overtown Avenue on July 3.

Firefighters had to go into a house in the school grounds and lead its janitor to safety.

The St Marnock's blaze came just a day after it was reported that metal thieves wrecked 10 classrooms, a sensory room, computers and carpets at two other Glasgow schools.

Anyone with information about the St Marnock's school fire is asked to call Pollok CID on 0141 532 5600.
