A large-scale fire which damaged cars at a vehicle scrapyard is being treated as suspicious, police have said.

The blaze at Nobles scrapyard in Kirkcaldy, Fife, broke out at about 10.30pm last night and caused "substantial damage".

At the height of the incident about 50 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze, which was put out by around 8.30am today.

No-one was injured as a result of the fire in Denburn Road.

Police have launched a joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and appealed for information.

Detective Inspector Colin Robson said: "This was a large-scale fire that has caused substantial damage.

"Thankfully no-one has been injured as a result of the incident.

"We are appealing to the public for any information regarding this incident. We are particularly keen to trace any vehicles which they may have seen in the area around the time of the fire.

"Extra police patrols of the area are now being carried out as part of our efforts to reassure the public and bring the culprits to justice."
