A man has died and his daughter was injured after his Porsche hit a barrier on a major road.

The incident happened shortly before 9pm yesterday on the A82 Great Western Road, at Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire.

Strathclyde Police said the 50-year-old was heading west when the car apparently lost control on a bend near the West Park Hotel and struck a pedestrian barrier.

The driver, who has not yet been named, was taken to the Western Infirmary, where he died a short time later.

His 16-year-old daughter, a passenger in the car, was also taken to the hospital suffering from chest injuries. Her condition is described as stable.

Police said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Constable John Hill urged anyone with information to come forward. He said: "We have already spoken to a number of people who were driving on the road at the time who stopped to assist those involved. However, I would appeal to anyone who saw the crash who has not already come forward to contact the road policing unit at Dumbarton on 01389 822000."

Meanwhile, a man has died in a crash which led to a main road being closed.

Mark McLelland, a 21-year-old dairy worker from Whauphill, was fatally injured in the single-vehicle collision on the A746 Main Street in Kirkinner, near Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway.

Emergency services were called shortly after 6am. Diversions were put in place while an investigation was launched.
