Price of pumpkins gets scary

PUMPKIN prices are set to soar this Halloween after bad weather triggered a massive shortage of the fruit available for sale.

Some farmers have admitted prices may rise by as much as 20% after what has been described as the worst harvest in years.

The fruit – most commonly used for the carving of decorative Halloween lanterns – cannot grow properly if conditions are too wet.

Almost half of the pumpkins produced by some farmers cannot be sold because they are not ripe enough or have been destroyed completely by the rain.
