Police are hunting two men who broke into a family home and killed a puppy during an attempted theft.

The eight-week-old pet died after the intruders removed it from a cage in the kitchen of a house in Aberlady, East Lothian, as the occupants slept.

The suspects were able to escape after being disturbed by the family at the property in Tranter Crescent at around 1.45am.

Detective Inspector Samantha Ainslie, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a horrific and cruel incident and it is essential we trace these men as soon as possible.

"In the meantime our enquiries are ongoing and high visibility reassurance patrols are being conducted in the local area."

The first suspect is described as white, about 25 years old, between 5ft 9in and 5ft 10in and of medium build, with acne around the chin and mouth.

He was wearing a dark hoodie with a light zip and pull cords on the hood, dark tracksuit bottoms and dark shoes or trainers.

The second man was of a similar build and height and was also wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
