SHAMED former Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell is due to appear as a guest speaker at a charity event entitled It's a Scandal.

The fundraiser, which is being organised by Epilepsy Scotland, is thought to be Mr Purcell's first official public appearance since he resigned in disgrace over a cocaine scandal two years ago.

He initially blamed "stress and exhaustion" for his decision to quit as leader, but later admitted to using cocaine and struggling with alcohol problems.

He was investigated by police over claims of corruption during his time in office but no charges were brought against him.

Mr Purcell has been listed as one of four speakers to appear at the event, which has promised guests "scandalous tales and witty anecdotes".

Other speakers include former director of football at Rangers, Gordon Smith, solicitor Ricky Hutchison and TV sports reporter Alison Walker.

During the event, which takes place at Glasgow's Grand Central Hotel next month, they will each be given the same topic to talk about and the best speaker will be voted for by the audience.

A spokesman for Epilepsy Scotland said the former leader is offering his time at the fundraisers for free.

The spokesman said: "This is our biggest fundraising event of the year. We do not judge people on what they may have done in the past.

"We are just delighted that Steven has accepted our invitation to speak at our gala charity dinner and provide his services for free."
