The Duchess of Cornwall was said to be "delighted" after she was handed Andy Murray's sweatband as a memento following his Wimbledon third round victory.

Britain's top tennis star threw his wristband in celebration towards Camilla at Number One court.

The Scot's band was caught by All England Club chairman Philip Brook, who then passed it to Camilla - who had earlier revealed she was a big Rafael Nadal fan.

Murray said later that the Duchess had shown him the sweatband in her bag, as a royal source confirmed she was "delighted" with her memento.

After his straight sets victory, Murray said: "The wristband actually hit the chairman of Wimbledon because he was there with her.

"The Duchess opened up her bag and my wristband was in there, so he obviously had given it to her."

A Clarence House spokeswoman said the Duchess and Murray met after his win so she could "pass on her congratulations".

Camilla abandoned the royal box on Centre Court with her sister Annabel Elliot to watch the Scottish star take on Dutchman Robin Haase.

Earlier, the Duchess was introduced to Nadal, a 14-time grand slam champion, as she arrived at the All England Club in south west London.

"Rafa, how lovely to meet you," the Duchess said. "Are you playing today?"

After Nadal, 29, confirmed he was playing on Centre Court later, Camilla said: "I hope you win."

Camilla also met Rufus the hawk, who is tasked with keeping pesky pigeons away from Centre Court.

James Ward joined Murray and fellow Briton Heather Watson in the third round. The 28-year-old wildcard banked £77,000 by beating Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic in four sets.
