A man is being treated in hospital after he was found lying in a railway cutting with serious burns.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Nursery Street near Pollokshields East station in Glasgow at 6.20am today.

The 21-year-old man was taken to the city's Victoria Infirmary, where his condition is described as serious.

It is thought he may have come into contact with overhead power lines.

British Transport Police (BTP) said that an investigation is under way to establish how the man came to be there.

Detective Inspector Grant Cathcart said: "Our enquiries are at an early stage and I am anxious to speak with anyone who was in this area between 4.15am and 6.20am, and may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact BTP as a matter of urgency."

The incident caused disruption to ScotRail train services on the Glasgow to Neilston/Newton line with some delays and cancellations.

A ScotRail spokesman said: "We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by circumstances beyond our control."
