Rangers' non-executive director Ian Hart has resigned from the board, the club has informed the London Stock Exchange.

The retired Glasgow businessman has stepped down to focus on charity work.

He accepted a place on the board last November, along with ex-manager Walter Smith, who became chairman and quit in August.

Some shareholders have been seeking to force changes to the board. A petition has been raised at the Court of Session in Edinburgh to bring a vote on the admission of new directors at the club's annual general meeting on October 24 and a hearing is set to take place in the court on Monday.

A statement to the stock exchange confirmed: "The Company today announces that Ian Hart, Non-Executive Director, has resigned from the board in order to pursue the charitable work in which he is involved more actively."

Chief executive Craig Mather said despite his departure, Mr Hart remained a huge fan of the club. He said: "It is with sadness that we see Ian depart from the board and we would like to thank him for his valuable contribution over the past year."
