Flintoff said "enough was enough" after reading 30 pages of The Impossible Dead while telling his Twitter followers he was sticking to Ben Elton from now on.
Rankin, who is currently in South Africa, retorted that one could learn from objective, incisive criticism, while reminding himself to "have more things happen in books" and "be like Ben Elton".
Flintoff, who has now retired from Test cricket, said of his feedback on The Impossible Dead, which centres on the work of Malcolm Fox, a police officer working for the complaints division: "Pleasure!" He added: "Just a bit more going on please."
As the pair batted back and forth, Rankin concluded that the cricketer's testimony should be included on the cover.
Rankin tweeted: "'The dullest book ever - Andrew Flintoff.' Iain Banks would have insisted that I stick that on the next edition."
