Six puppies dumped in a plastic box have been named after some of Santa's flying reindeer.

The six-week-old crossbreeds were found beside a wheelie bin shelter and handed to the Scottish SPCA's Glasgow care centre on Wednesday.

Staff named the dogs Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet and Cupid.

The puppies are very friendly and the charity said it will soon look for new homes for them.

Assistant manager Anna O'Donnell said: "It's so sad these lovely guys and girls have had such a tough start in life. The pups weren't cold which we would have expected if they had been left outside all night, so we don't think they had been there for too long before they were found.

"We're very glad the pups are now safe and we'll soon be looking to find them the loving owners they deserve."

Abandoning animals is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can be banned from keeping animals for life.

The Scottish SPCA is urging anyone with information about the dogs to call 03000 999 999.
