The meeting descended into violence between the protesters and the police, with the Riot Act being read. The Liberal Government, fearing a Bolshevik revolution, deployed armed troops and tanks in the square.
l The square, laid out in 1781, later provided a home to political hustings, meetings, annual Remembrance Day parades and protests against the poll tax and Iraq War.
