EMERGENCY services took part in a dramatic training exercise yesterday on the River Clyde, in which they had to save the injured victims of a collision between a speedboat and a seaplane.

More than 30 members of the fire, police and ambulance services had to rescue 16 victims of the mock crash from the freezing waters.

Passers-by watched as fire crews used two new specialised boats to steer through waves, burning wreckage and chemicals to aid the casualties near Glasgow Science Centre

Assistant Chief Officer David Goodhew, director of operations at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, said: "As a result of this exercise, we will be more experienced and better prepared for a serious incident on the River Clyde or any other body of water."
