Rock veterans Status Quo are celebrating after achieving their first million-seller for decades - as their beer brand struck a chord with drinkers.

The group launched their Piledriver ale - named after one of their classic albums - earlier this year and now the tipple has shifted its millionth pint in the space of seven months.

Guitarist and singer Francis Rossi said: "This is incredible news - we haven't seen sales figures like that since the '70s. People seemed to love Piledriver from the moment we launched it, and that success just kept rolling."

Chris Keating, a marketing manager from Wychwood Brewery, which brews the beer, said: "We're overwhelmed.

"The reception from the fans has been amazing. Word has spread about what a great beer Piledriver is, because it's not just Quo fans who are buying it - beer fans are too."

As well as being sold in many UK pubs and being stocked in Morrisons, it is also being sold in Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy.

The band will perform an acoustic show for Radio 2 on Wednesday from London's Roundhouse, showcasing songs from new album Aquostic (Stripped Bare).

They will also play a European tour starting next month.
