JK Rowling's first adult novel failed to ignite mania at bookstores – but The Casual Vacancy was an instant online hit, topping internet sales charts within hours of going on sale.

The Edinburgh-based author's first full-length book in five years was delivered amid high security to stores, but its publication in e-book and audio helped it become Amazon's transatlantic number one bestseller.
Pre-order sales reached a record 2.6 million and Amazon was ferrying tens of thousands of copies around the country, including from its huge centre in Dunfermline, Fife.
