A PATRIOTIC video designed to motivate the England rugby team is being suppressed by sporting bosses due to fears of "political ramifications" - including from Scottish nationalists.

The film, created by Rugby Football Union, promotes "English identity" and is said to be emotionally charged to spur the players on to victory.

However, there are fears it could provoke anger among independence supporters if released publicly, in the wake of last month's referendum.

Stuart Lancaster, the side's head coach, said he was concerned the footage could prompt a backlash and claims of "arrogance". He said: "I am hesitant to put the video out there because of the political ramifications."

Glyn Davies, a Welsh Conservative MP and a member of the parliamentary rugby union group, said he recognised the importance of Mr Lancaster protecting the team from any possible negative reactions.

He added: "We are living in an era where people are outraged by the oddest things. I haven't seen the film but rugby teams have just got to be sensitive."

A spokesman for Rugby Union said there were no plans for the film to be released publicly.
